Dear Speech Coaches,
The Ashland-Greenwood Speech Team invites you to the third
annual Oxbow Invitational on Saturday,
January 13, 2007.
1. We will be running both Varsity and Novice
competition. Varsity will medal 6 places, and Novice will medal 4. Novice sweepstakes will count for half of
Varsity sweepstake points. There will be
no novice Duet Acting, Duo Improv. or
OID.
2. Students may be double entered in each
flight. If they are in Extemp.,
please make sure they make it to their other event.
3. Please provide one judge for every 5 entries
or fraction thereof. We will provide
judges at a cost of $15.00 for each uncovered slot.
4. We will be holding two extra events for your
more daring students:
POETRY SLAM: Competitors
will read up to 3 minutes of their own
original poetry. The audience
will choose the winners of this competition based on the official rules of Slam
Poetry. Poems may be memorized or
recited from a book or paper. Poets will
be judged both on the quality of their poem as well as presentation. I know that every school has would-be
poets. Encourage them to try this fun
and exciting event. It’s very informal and
entertaining. I’m planning on holding
the Poetry Slam during the lull time while we tally scores. There is no entry fee, and you don’t have to
provide judges.

IMPROMPTU DUET ACTING: In
this event, each school will provide one member of the duet. They will be paired (at random) with a
student from another school. Each pair
will then draw a character, place, object, and situation. Then they will have five minutes to prepare
and act out a play. They will be judged
on their ability to create characters, develop a story, and entertain the
audience. I think this will be a fun
event because students will be encouraged to mix with students from other
schools. This event will be judged, so
entry and judging fees apply. Sweepstakes
points will be split between the finalists.
5. Fees: $6 per entry.
$15 for each uncovered judging slot.
6. Right now, we’re limiting numbers to three
entries per event. However, if this puts
you in a bind, let me know and we’ll see if we can squeeze extras in. Contact me BEFORE you have extra
entries. We don’t want to overcrowd the
sections.
7. Please fill out the entry form and mail it by
Jan. 8, 2007. Or, even better, EMAIL me
the entries. Please include all
of your school and total cost information in the email, and don’t forget to
include judges. If you have changes, please email them to me ASAP.
We look forward to
seeing you at the Oxbow Invitational!
