Professional Growth
All professional
employees of the district are expected to engage in activities which maintain
and improve their professional skills during the period of their employment by
the school district.
Professional growth
activities include exchange teaching, contributions to
the local school district through participation in in-service programs and in
activities designed to develop plans or materials for district use, study in
colleges or universities or through participation in workshops offered by
public and private agencies, community service, and occupational experience.
The superintendent is
charged with the responsibility of developing and administering professional
development and in-service opportunities for members of the board of education,
administrative personnel, and all personnel of the district (2500).
The superintendent shall
establish a system for maintenance of records of the professional growth of
each employee; this system, and requirements for employee notification of
professional growth experiences, shall be described in the employee handbooks prepared by the
district. Employee handbooks shall be
reviewed on an annual basis.
The district may
reimburse staff or pay fees or tuition costs for staff for participation in
professional development opportunities.
In order to be reimbursed or in order to have the district pay the fees
an employee must submit a requisition in advance of the workshop, class or professional
development opportunity; the training must be related to an individual’s
teaching or administrative assignment, the activity must be a part of the
individual’s or the district’s plan for professional development and permission
must be received from the building principal.
In no cases shall the district pay fees for staff to participate in a
workshop which is mandated by state or federal law to obtain or maintain
certification or which is used by the employee for advancement on the salary
schedule.
