Workplace Safety

It is the responsibility of each employee to maintain a safe and healthy workplace for employees within the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools.  Every employee is responsible to report unsafe conditions to his/her immediate supervisor or the workplace safety committee.

The district will have a eight member workplace safety committee.  The Safety Program Administrator will chair the committee.  The Superintendent or his or her designee shall serve in this capacity. The chair shall have the responsibility to maintain a record of safety committee members, to call meetings of the safety committee, to maintain minutes of the meetings, to post information regarding workplace safety including the names of safety committee members and to forward recommendations from the committee to the Superintendent of Schools.

Three other individuals designated by the Superintendent of Schools shall also represent the employer.  Four employee representatives on the committee shall be comprised of volunteers after a written notice seeking volunteers has been directed to all employees. If more than four employees volunteer, four will be chosen at random to serve on the committee.  If less than four employees volunteer, the balance of representatives will be appointed at random from the remainder of employees.  Employee representatives shall serve two year terms.  At the end of the two year term volunteers will again be solicited for the committee.

The safety committee shall meet at least once every three months or in a reasonable timely response to employee complaints.  Members shall be compensated for serving on the committee at their regular wages.  The committee shall review and approve minutes of its meetings and make recommendations to the Superintendent of Schools. All recommendations shall be considered advisory only and shall not deal with issues, which may be subject to a collective bargaining agreement.

The Safety Program Administrator shall be responsible for developing an effective written injury plan which shall address all work sites and all classes of workers. The plan shall include safety training addressing initial safety orientation rules, policies and job specific procedures; job specific training prior to performing hazardous work; and periodic refresher training on injury prevention plan, on safety rules, policies and procedures.

It shall be the duty of the safety committee to adopt and maintain the effective written injury prevention plan.  The committee may adopt the plan developed by the Safety Program Administrator or may develop its own.

The safety committee shall review all recordable injuries or illnesses. Recordable injuries or illnesses shall be those injuries or illnesses reported to the Safety Program Administrator as workers compensation illnesses or injuries. After such review, and when appropriate, the committee shall make written recommendations regarding future prevention.

The Safety Program administrator shall be responsible to report any and all workplace deaths within 48 hours to the Department of Labor.  A copy of all accidental workplace death reviews made by the safety committee shall be forwarded within fifteen (15) working days to the Department of Labor.
