Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Policy

 

 

In order to enhance safety measures for the staff members, students and visitors of the Ashland- Greenwood Public Schools., it shall be the policy of the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools to maintain an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools.  This document sets forth the practice protocols, policies, and procedures of the AED program.

 

Use of the AED in an emergency situation shall be limited to Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools staff who have received appropriate training in the use of the AED as per Nebraska state statute 71-51.102 or Ashland Emergency Services personnel responding to an emergency in the school setting.

 

It shall be the responsibility of the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools to ensure that the defibrillator is maintained and inspected according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

 

It shall be the responsibility of the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools to ensure that all designated staff members are trained in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including the use of the AED and that said staff members are recertified in these skills in the appropriate time frame.

 

These policies and procedures are to be reviewed yearly and updated as needed.

Regulation

 

I.          Training

            a.         America Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Basic                                                      Life Support CPR course with AED training completed.

            b.         Training will be renewed every 2 years for AHA certificates and every 1                                                       year for ARC certificates.

 

II.          Location of AED: AED’s are mounted on a wall in a locking cabinet (response team                                    members will have keys).  At the Elementary it is located in the entrance way of the East                                    Gym door.  This makes it accessible for activities in the Gym and also for the Football                                  Field.  At the MS/SH it is located to the right of the Southwest Gym door.  Most activities                                 at the MS/SH take place in the Gym.

 

III.         Maintenance & Inspection of AED: The AED unit shall be kept protected in its case, as       supplied by the manufacturer and shall be kept in a clean, warm and dry           location at all times        when not in use.  For complete maintenance information and instructions, please refer to the    operator’s manual.  The Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools shall perform and document the    following:

            a.         Daily:

                        i.          Visually inspect the Status Indicator Light and verify that a green

                                     light is illuminated.

                        ii.          Ensure that nothing is impairing clear view of the Status Indicator                                                   Light.

                        iii.         Visually inspect AED for proper location, clean, no tampering                                                                    evident.

                        iv.         Initial operational checklist (kept in Nurse’s office)

            b.         Monthly:

                        i.          Check Supplies, accessories, and spares for expiration dating and                                                            damage.

                        ii.          Ensure all cables, cords, and connectors are in good condition and                                                            void of any cuts, cracks, frays or bent pin.

                        iii.         Verify that the pads and battery have not expired.  If supplies have                                                             expired, new supplies will be requisitioned.

                        iv.         Ensure that the unit is clean and void of any cracks or other signs                                                             of damage.

                        v.          Initial operational checklist (kept in Nurse’s office).

            c.         After Each Use.

                        i.          Inspect exterior of unit for dirt or contamination and clean if needed.                                                           Refer to the operator’s manual for proper cleaning solutions                                                                       available for use.  Wear gloves to protect from possible                                                                                   contamination by body fluids that may be present on the AED.

                        ii.          Replace the defibrillation pads with a new set of pads.

                        iii.         Remove the batteries from the battery compartment.  Dispose of                                                                batteries properly.  Install a new set of batteries.

                        iv.         Change dates on devise for “Install Battery Before ______” and                                                                  “Use Before ______” on pads.

                        v.          Perform both the daily and monthly checks as outlined above.

 

 

           

 

 

If a problem is detected in any such inspection, or if some attention otherwise seems warranted,      the AED unit should be serviced and attended to immediately.

            The person detecting any problems shall promptly notify the School Nurse to report the results of     the inspection.  The problem will then be remedied immediately or the appropriate technical      support personnel will be contacted.

 

IV.        In the Event of Emergency:  Utilize professional training provided by the      CPR/AED course.  The   main steps are summarized below:

            a.         Check for responsiveness.  If unresponsive, call 911 and get AED.  If you                                       have another person with you, stay with the victim and assign other                                                       person to call 911 and get AED.

            b          Check ABC’s: (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).  Open airway.  If no                                                            breathing, begin rescue breathing.  If no circulation, perform CPR.  Apply                                        AED as soon as possible.

            c.         Do not use AED if victim is less than 8 years old or less than 55 pounds                                                    (25 kg.).

            d.         If victim is in water, remove victim from contact with water and dry the                                                        chest.

            e.         Defibrillation: Turn on power to AED.  The AED will instruct you through                                                      the rest of the procedure.  Attach electrodes to victim’s bare chest.  Plug                                                         electrode cord into the AED.  Do not touch the victim while the AED                                                  analyzes the heart rhythm.  Announce – “Everyone clear!”.  AED will                                                         announce if shock is advised.  AED will charge and then instruct you to                                                   deliver the shock.  Announce – “Everyone clear!”.  Do not touch the victim.                                                  Survey the scene to assure that no one is touching the victim.  Press                                                        shock button.  Continue to follow AED prompts until emergency medical                                                    personnel arrive.  If heart rhythm is not shockable, AED will prompt you to                                      begin/continue CPR.

            f.          After emergency medical assistance has reached the location of the                                                          emergency, the employee or employees who have been attending to the                                                    emergency situation shall remain at the scene to assist the emergency                                                          medical service personnel.

            g.         If the victim must be transported from the facility, the EMT’s will switch the                                                 victim to their AED. 

            h.         Complete AED use form – original kept by Ashland-Greenwood Public                                                       Schools, 1 copy sent with victim on transport, 1 copy to Medical Director.
